1Password review
Families and businesses wanting the best balance of security and polish.
Overview
1Password pairs the strongest consumer security architecture in the category — a 128-bit Secret Key alongside your master password, so vault data is never decryptable from a stolen server blob alone — with the most polished apps across every platform. Travel Mode, Watchtower breach monitoring, excellent family sharing and mature business admin round it out. There is no free tier, and prices have crept up, but for most people and most companies this is the password manager that asks the least and protects the most.
Strengths and weaknesses
What we like
- Secret Key architecture — server data alone can't unlock your vault
- Regular independent audits, published in full
- Best-in-class apps on every platform and browser
- Travel Mode and Watchtower are genuinely useful
- Mature family and business admin (SCIM, policies, recovery)
What to watch
- No free tier — trial only
- Prices have risen steadily
- Family plan sharing has vault limits on lower tiers
- Closed-source (though heavily audited)

Best for
Almost everyone — families, professionals and companies that want maximum assurance with minimum friction.
Probably not for
Strict zero-budget users (Bitwarden's free tier) and open-source absolutists.
Our verdict — 9.0/10
1Password is our overall pick: the rare product where the strongest security story and the best daily experience are the same product.
