Overview

Microsoft Copilot is less a product than a layer: it lives in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams, grounded in your organisation's emails, files and meetings. For enterprises that is transformative — summarised meetings, drafted documents and analysed spreadsheets without data leaving the compliance boundary. As a standalone assistant it is merely good rather than great, and the economics only make sense at organisational scale. Judge it as a Microsoft 365 feature, not a ChatGPT rival, and it makes far more sense.

Strengths and weaknesses

What we like

  • Embedded where work happens: Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams
  • Grounded in your org's data via Microsoft Graph
  • Enterprise-grade security, compliance and admin controls
  • Teams meeting summarisation is a genuine time-saver
  • Backed by the biggest enterprise rollout machine in software

What to watch

  • Standalone chat experience trails ChatGPT and Claude
  • Expensive at ~$30/user/mo on top of M365 licences
  • Value collapses if your work isn't in Microsoft's stack
  • Feature naming (Copilot, Copilot Pro, M365 Copilot) confuses buyers

Who Microsoft Copilot is for — and who should skip it

Best for

Microsoft 365 businesses of any size wanting AI with enterprise compliance, and Teams-heavy organisations drowning in meetings.

Probably not for

Google shops, freelancers wanting the sharpest standalone assistant, and teams unwilling to pay per-seat enterprise pricing.

Our verdict — 8.5/10

For Microsoft-centred organisations Copilot is the pragmatic enterprise choice — deployable, compliant and genuinely useful. As a standalone assistant, buy ChatGPT or Claude instead.
